Bangladesh remains top cotton importer in 2015-16
In the year 2015-2016, Bangladesh imported 6.2 Mn cotton bales and reinforced its position as the world’s largest importer. As forecasted by The US department of agriculture (USDA), Bangladesh’s imports may increase to 6.3 Mn bales in 2016-17. This increases Bangladesh’s share of global imports to over 18%, which is more than double its share seen 5 years before.
Various Cotton exporters from Benin and Burkina Faso, and Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan will be impacted due to this large change in Bangladesh’s imports.
As per the ‘Cotton: World Markets and Trade’ October 2016 report, Uzbek origin cotton demand in Bangladesh has recognized to be considerably stronger and has resulted into a significant upward revision to the 2015-16 Uzbek export estimate.

Import estimation for 2016 – 2017:
- Bangladesh imports to increase by 3,00,000 bales to 6.4 Mn bales.
- India’s cotton imports to increase by 500,000 bales to 1.5 Mn bales
- Indonesia imports to increase 100,000 bales to 2.9 Mn bales.
Export estimation for 2016-2017:
- United States is expected to export 12 Mn bales.
- Brazil exports may reduce by 500,000 bales to 2.9 Mn bales.
- Australia exports is expected to increase by 800,000 bales to 4.2 Mn bales.
- Benin exports are pegged at 700,000 bales.
- Mali exports are pegged at 1.2 Mn bales.
